The Basics

What is sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is a breathing problem that happens while you’re asleep. The muscles in your throat relax too much, your airway narrows or closes, and your breathing is reduced or stops for a short time.

Your brain wakes you just enough to start breathing again. Then it happens again. You’re often unaware of any of it.

About 5%

of Australians are estimated to have sleep apnoea.

About 1 in 4 men

over 30 have some degree of it.

100s

of breathing pauses can happen in a single night.

The Basics

Why treat it?

Each pause can drop your oxygen and break your sleep. Night after night, that adds up.

If it’s left untreated it can lead to

Unrefreshing sleep and daytime sleepiness

A higher risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and diabetes

Moodiness, and trouble with memory and concentration

A higher risk of car accidents and accidents at work

Snoring that can keep a partner awake

These are risks, not certainties.

The Basics

Treatment has two aims:

to treat your symptoms, &

to reduce your risk of related health problems.

A common treatment is CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure): a small air pump that sends air under gentle pressure to a mask, to hold your throat open while you sleep.

Your sleep study report says which treatment is recommended for you.

Questions people ask us

How do I know if I should be tested?

Start with the signs on this page: loud snoring, pauses in your breathing that someone else has noticed, and feeling tired and unrefreshed after sleep. The 60-second check on our home sleep test page gives you a quick guide. It is a screening guide only, not a diagnosis. Only a sleep study reviewed by a specialist can confirm sleep apnoea.Take the 60-second check

Who reads my results?

An independent sleep specialist, who is a doctor, reviews your recording and writes the report. Our pharmacist then goes through it with you in plain English. You keep the report, and a copy goes to your GP if you say yes.

What if the test finds I don’t have sleep apnoea?

We’ll tell you. The report comes from a specialist doctor, not from us. If something else is going on, we’ll point you in the right direction.

Is CPAP the only treatment?

No. For mild sleep apnoea with few symptoms, losing weight, drinking less alcohol in the evening or changing your sleeping position may be all that is needed. For moderate to severe sleep apnoea, the two most commonly used treatments are CPAP and an oral appliance fitted by a dentist. The specialist’s report says what is recommended for you. We set up CPAP only when the report recommends it. For anything else, the pharmacist explains the report and refers you back to your doctor.

What does it cost?

The 15-minute consultation is free, with no obligation to do the test. The home sleep test is $90 during our launch special (normally $120), which includes the patch, the specialist’s report and your results appointment. There is no separate fee for the mask fitting and machine set-up when you hire or buy a machine from us. Machine and mask prices are in the shop.See machines and prices

I’ve already been diagnosed. Where do I start?

At Stage 2. Call us and bring your sleep study report. The pharmacist reads it first. If it recommends CPAP, we book your mask fitting and machine set-up. If it recommends something else, the pharmacist will tell you and refer you back to your doctor.

I bought my machine somewhere else. Can you still help?

Yes. We re-fit masks, supply masks and parts, and check machines for anyone using CPAP, wherever the machine came from. [Fee for a fitting or re-fit when the machine was bought elsewhere: to confirm]

My machine has stopped working. What should I do?

Bring it in with its power lead, water chamber and tubing. We check the filter, the tubing, the water chamber and the mask at the counter first. If the machine is faulty, we tell you the next step: a warranty repair if you bought it from us and it’s still covered, or a written quote for you to approve first. A loan machine may be available while yours is away, subject to availability. [Loan machine: price and terms to confirm]

Can I claim any of it back?

[Medicare line for the home sleep test: to confirm] If you have extras cover, your health fund may pay a rebate towards a machine, and sometimes a mask. It varies between funds. Some ask for a letter from your doctor, and all need an invoice, so ask us for an itemised one.

Is it private?

Yes. We talk away from the counter, and your results are discussed only with you, in the consulting room or by phone.

Is this for children?

No. Our home sleep test is for adults. If you’re asking for someone under 18, call us and the pharmacist will talk it through with you.
